Long, long ago, the area where the shophouses stand today was the location of a nutmeg plantation. It wasn't until the 1902-1930s period when the wealthy Teochew Straits Chinese started to transform the area, building the two-storey terrace houses which we all recognize today as part of Singapore's heritage.
